The Criterion Club Hotel, one of Alexandra’s original main street hotels that is affectionately known as the ‘Middle Pub’ by locals, is a popular stop. The Criterion Hotel provides a complete range of hospitality services as well as cost-effective accommodation for free independent travellers, backpackers, sports, workers and social groups.
The Criterion Hotel occupies a prime corner site on Tarbert Street, close to the banks of the picturesque Clutha River. It is the oldest hotel in Alexandra and the property is a landmark building surrounded by retail shops, The Warehouse, and office buildings.
The Public Bar is accessed from Tarbert Street and features a built-in timber bar and counter top, TAB, poolroom area, Sky big screen TV, and ladies and men’s toilet facilities.
The substantial Garden Bar is mostly utilised during the summer months. It is accessed from the Public Bar via a verandah. Toilet facilities are provided and there is disabled access.
The Restaurant, which is accessed from Tarbert Street also, has a bar and seating for more than 50 diners. The restaurant offers bar meals, light meals, and a full 4 course menu. It is reputed to serve the best Blue cod in town.
